MANAGER Russell Martin believes Cameron Archer and Lesley Ugochukwu will be "brilliant signings" for Saints.

Archer, 22, joined from Aston Villa on Friday and was registered just in time to play for Southampton in their opening game at Newcastle United.

The England youth international came on in the second half and went close with a late chance having also fired over the bar.

Ugochukwu, 20, has arrived from Chelsea on a season-long loan deal - but he did not make the squad at St James' Park.

The Frenchman is hopeful of increasing his game time on the south coast after injuries prevented him from regular action during his first season at Chelsea.

Martin is delighted that both players opted for a move to St Mary's despite interest in both players from other clubs.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Martin said: "They both had interest from other clubs and I'm really pleased they've chosen us - and Chelsea for choosing us to help develop Lesley.

"I am really impressed with them both as young men. I met them both and discussed things at length. I think they fit in really well.

"They give us something we don't have. Lesley, in his position real power, real athleticism. Cameron is really sharp, really quick and an absolute goal threat.

"I think they're both going to be brilliant signings and I'm really, really pleased to get them done."

Archer scored four goals in 29 appearances for Sheffield United as they were relegated to the Championship last season.

He played alongside Ben Brereton Diaz during his time with the Blades and has also played with Taylor Harwood-Bellis for England's under-21s.

Upon joining Saints, he said: “I'm really excited to be here. I had a good chat with the gaffer. Obviously, he told me everything I needed to hear."

Ugochukwu joined Chelsea from Ligue 1 side Rennes in the summer of 2023 and played 12 times in the Premier League last season.

Most of his experience has come in his home country. The Rennes-born midfielder played 60 times for his boyhood club before making the switch to Stamford Bridge.
