GOALKEEPER Aaron Ramsdale believes playing for Saints is a "perfect fit" following his permanent arrival from Arsenal.

The 26 year old has signed a four-year contract at St Mary's having lost his first-team spot at Arsenal to David Raya.

Five-time England international Ramsdale conceded he never wants to "sit on the bench" again and noted that regular game time played a key role in his decision to join Saints.

As one of the most experienced players in the squad, Ramsdale expects to help his new teammates - both young and old.

Speaking in his first interview, he admitted he hopes a move to Southampton can reinvigorate his love for football.

“For me (playing regularly) was huge. I started my football journey for the love of playing - trying to get as much dirt on my kit to make my mum’s job harder,” he joked.

“I loved playing anywhere I could. In the street or in the park. In goal or outfield. For me to get that love back into my game is massive.

“The manager’s enthusiasm breeds confidence, enjoyment and pure life around the place. It’s a great fit for me.

“I’ve got experience but I can still always learn. I’m still a young man at 26. Hopefully I can learn something from the staff and the players.

“I’m looking forward to helping other players - older or younger. Getting back to doing what I do best (is the best for me).

“Playing games of football, making saves, having fun and showing what I’m really about - let’s be honest, it’s going to be a hard season.

“But that is something I’m going to relish. It’s going to be even sweeter at the end of the season when we celebrate again.

“It’s perfect for me at this stage of my career, to get back to what I do. I’m delighted to be here. I’ve had the feeling of sitting on the bench - I never want to do that again.

"Playing football, winning games or getting draws away from home against tough opposition is something you live for.”
