DEFENDER Taylor Harwood-Bellis impressed during in his debut as Saints captain as they beat Everton on penalties to progress in the Carabao Cup.

The England youth international headed Russell Martin's side level in regular time after Abdoulaye Doucouré had given the Toffees the lead.

Saints had Alex McCarthy to thank in the penalty shootout after he saved Ashley Young's effort to secure passage to the fourth round.

The veteran goalkeeper also produced two close-range stops to deny Jesper Lindstrøm when the Danish international looked certain to score.

Here's how we rated every Southampton player's performance at Goodison Park on Tuesday evening...

Starters

Alex McCarthy - 8.

Made his 150th appearance for the club. Produced two important saves to deny Lindstrøm to keep Southampton in the game. Saved Young's penalty to win the game. Very solid.

Grew into the game but was caught out in possession on a few occasions. Recovered well to block a cross after passing to an Everton player. Scored Southampton's final penalty.

Harwood-Bellis - 8.

Wore the armband in Jack Stephen's absence. Headed Saints level moments after an important defensive intervention. He was held off by Beto when he played Lindstrøm through on goal. Completed 150 passes. Scored his penalty.

Had a tough battle with Beto. Grabbed hold of the Portuguese forward's shirt at every given opportunity but got away with it. Lost the most duels (six) in the game.

Charlie Taylor - 6.

Everton got most of their joy playing down his side but they also failed to score so he got away with it. Delivered a brilliant ball in for Harwood-Bellis' equaliser.

Adam Lallana - 7.

His first start since returning. Showed his vast experience and looked very good on the ball. Played in a deeper role than expected. Could hear his voice in a quiet Goodison Park. Subbed at the break to manage his minutes.

Lesley Ugochukwu - 6.

The only player to keep his spot in the team from Saturday. Kept the ball ticking in midfield by completing 29 of his 33 passes. Almost cost Saints a goal when he slipped in midfield. Still looks like a player learning Martin's demands.

Joe Aribo - 6.

Came back into the team after dropping to the bench on the weekend. Struggled to impose himself on the game. Steady in defence but didn't offer too much going forward.

Maxel Cornet - 6.

Looked to deliver the ball into the box on every occasion. Fired over from the edge of the box. Grew into the game. Looked to be slightly out of sync with his teammates, which is not surprising given it was his first start.

Ryan Fraser - 6.

Won the free-kick which led to Southampton's equaliser. Had a near-post effort saved when he could have cut back for Adam Armstrong. More minutes in the tank.

Struggled to impact the game as Saints focused their play down the wings. His only effort came in the first minute. Managed 21 touches in 71 minutes. Looks someway off the player he was last season.

Substitutes

Mateus Fernandes - 6.

Replaced Lallana at the break and added energy to the midfield. Looked to play into the final third. Set up Fraser for his chance. Scored Southampton's first penalty to get them going in the shootout.

Added calm and composure to the midfield when he came on just past the hour mark. Completed all 15 of his passes. Got Young booked and was able to continue after hobbling for a minute or two.

Ben Brereton Diaz - 6.

Came on to replace the tiring Fraser. Offered a different option on the left. Saw an effort saved by João Virgínia. Smashed his penalty into the bottom corner.

Tyler Dibling - 7.

Southampton's biggest attacking threat once again. Managed the challenge of facing the experienced Young. Created two shooting opportunities with his dribbling - one of which smacked Brereton Diaz.

Ross Stewart - N/A.

Introduced with 10 minutes left to give Saints a different option but didn't do too much. Touched the ball just five times. Took his penalty well.
