MANAGER Russell Martin hopes Southampton's Carabao Cup win over Everton can be a turning point in their season.

Saints progressed to the fourth round with a 6-5 penalties win - after a 1-1 draw in regular time -thanks to Alex McCarthy's save to deny Ashley Young.

Abdoulaye Doucouré had put Everton ahead from a set-piece before Taylor Harwood-Bellis, the captain on the evening, equalised with his first goal of the season.

The result saw Southampton get one over the only team below them in the Premier League table and Martin hopes they can continue their momentum against Ipswich on Saturday.

Asked if he believes this win can be a turning point in Southampton's season, Martin said: "I hope so. We'll see on 5pm on Saturday.

"I feel like all you can ever ask is for the players to analyse the performance from Saturday, try and learn from it - to take something from it.

"What we learned was actually for half an hour we were brilliant (against Manchester United). The best performance of the season so far and looked very much like the team we wanted.

"Then we have a disappointing moment and it completely derails us. Tonight we didn't. We had a tough moment conceding and then they responded brilliantly.

"I think that's the learning and you analyse that and you improve and you grow from that and they did that tonight.

"Some of the guys were hurt by it last time but I feel like we're going to grow through that and we just need that first result.

"Once we get that, I'm really excited about what the group is capable of achieving because we have a young, hungry group that is willing to do brilliant things."

Saints made 10 changes from the team which lost 3-0 to Manchester United on Saturday with Lesley Ugochukwu the only one to keep his spot.

Adam Lallana, Maxwel Cornet and Ryan Fraser got their first start of the season at Everton, while the likes of James Bree and Nathan Wood returned to the starting lineup.

"The guys work hard together so we have a big group," Martin explained. "A bit too big probably in an ideal world but we try and keep everyone motivated.

"We train in a certain way that reflects what we want to do on a Saturday. It's all related to them and what they're going to do.

"A lot of guys playing their first game for us starts Wee Man coming back and Max Cornet. Adam Lallana, he's just a brilliant, beautiful footballer and he helps the team with a lot of his voice.

"Then more guys like Lesley and those guys, Charlie and Breezy, feeling it again and making sure they're ready to step in at any point.

"They have to push each other, the guys. They have to stay really hungry and they get on so well but they really compete as well and they push each other and that's important."
