A DEFLECTED stunner from Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy saw the Tractor Boys rescue a 1-1 draw against Southampton at St Mary's.

Academy graduate Tyler Dibling looked like being the hero after his first Southampton goal saw them 1-0 up in additional time.

Dibling, 18, remained composed in the box to beat his man and fire past Arijanet Muric for his first Premier League goal during the first half.

Cameron Archer had chances to double Southampton's lead but his failed efforts proved to be costly for a second home game.

Ipswich did the double over Saints last season, beating them to an automatic promotion spot before Russell Martin's side won the Championship play-offs.

Martin had hoped Southampton could use the pain they felt following a late 3-2 defeat at Portman Road as fuel for revenge.

Charlie Taylor, Adam Lallana and Ryan Fraser made their first league start of the season as the hosts made four changes from the team that lost 3-0 to Manchester United.

Downes wore the armband for Saints - as he did during his time at Ipswich - in the absence of captain Jack Stephens, who was suspended.

The visitors were without Kalvin Phillips through injury - Sweedish international Jens Cajuste stepped in to replace him in midfield.

Ipswich started quickly and went close through Sammie Szmodics after just one minute before Downes was almost punished by Cajuste while playing out from the back.

Southampton soon settled into the game and took the lead through academy graduate Dibling, scoring his first Premier League goal.

The talented starlet was set through by mentor Lallana and remained cool to get past Greaves and send Muric the wrong way.

Ipswich responded well to Southampton's opener and began to pile more pressure on the hosts, who held on to keep them at bay.

Archer, played through brilliantly by Dibling, had a chance to double the lead when he took the ball around Muric but could only hit the post from a tight angle.

Aaron Ramsdale produced two important saves to keep just before the break - the first to stop Leif Davis at the back post, the second a fine finger-tip save on Omari Hutchinson - to keep his side ahead.

Archer's first league goal for Saints continued to evade him in the second half. He was denied by Muric before Mateus Fernandes slipped running onto the rebound.

The away fans thought Ipswich had equalised three minutes later when Szmodics, played in on the right, crashed into the side netting.

The fast start to the second half continued when Fernandes and Archer combined to go close again.

Summer signing Archer could not reach Fernandes' ball across the box, which transpired to be his final action as Martin made a triple change.

The game had threatened to boil over and finally reached a tension point when Liam Delap and Downes were booked for a scuffle following a foul on Jan Bednarek.

Stewart was among those to enter for Southampton and formed a quick relationship with Dibling.

The teenager looked to play him in on goal twice but the Scot did not have the required pass to turn the through balls into chances.

Substitute Ben Brereton Diaz crashed over from the edge of the box when he met Fernandes' ball across after a brilliant move.

Having created two more chances, a tired Dibling was replaced by Adam Armstrong in the final 10 minutes to a standing ovation.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis was the next player to force a save from Muric as a second goal remained elusive at St Mary's.

It proved to be costly when Egypt international Morsy crashed in an equaliser, which took a deflection off Joe Aribo - in the fifth of seven additional minutes.
