SAINTS saw their first three points of the season slip through their hands when Sam Morsy crashed in a late equaliser for Ipswich on Saturday.

Russell Martin's side looked good value for the win after Tyler Dibling's first half goal but were forced to rue their missed chances once again.

Cameron Archer saw an effort hit the post before firing at Arijanet Muric in the second half.

Aaron Ramsdale's late heroics looked set to help them over the line before Southampton conceded from a setpiece once more.

Here are the major talking points from Southampton's first draw of the 2024/25 Premier League season...

Two points dropped but Saints are finally on the board

Flynn Downes admitted Southampton's 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town felt like a defeat due to the nature of their equaliser.

Saints looked set to secure their first win of the Premier League season but had to settle for a point against a fellow promoted side.

While it was undoubtedly two points dropped, Southampton are now on the board after their winless start to the season.

Martin suggested that winning no points from the first four games had an impact on the group's confidence.

Hopefully, this result can breed further confidence and act as fuel for a first win when Saints visit AFC Bournemouth in the next round of games.

Academy graduate Tyler Dibling's star continues to rise after an impressive start to his first senior campaign.

Dibling netted his maiden Premier League goal after just five minutes against Ipswich, sending St Mary's into a state of delirium.

It's somewhat poetic that it was fellow academy graduate and mentor Adam Lallana who set him up brilliantly for the goal.

Supporters continued to chant both of their names throughout the game as they shone on the pitch.

Lallana has still got it at the top level

Speaking of Lallana, the 36 year old continued to prove why Martin was delighted to secure his services for another year.

In addition to his fabulous assist, Lallana completed 35 of his 37 passes attempted - rolling back the years once more.

Martin admitted he felt starting Lallana would help the team after their slow start to the campaign and reiterated his importance.

On the field, the former captain can be seen barking instructions to his teammate while helping younger and less experienced players - such as Dibling or Mateus Fernandes - through the game.

Martin opted to leave Kyle Walker-Peters on the bench on Saturday - just as he did when Southampton played Ipswich at Portman Road.

The boss admitted it was more of a coincidence that he came out of the starting lineup to face Ipswich.

Charlie Taylor came into the side for his first Premier League start having provided the assist for Taylor Harwood-Bellis at Everton on Tuesday evening.

Taylor offers a more natural option on the left of his defence and was impressive. He looked to get the ball forward to the forwards whenever possible.
