FORMER Premier League defender turned pundit Ashely Williams sympathised with Russell Martin after Southampton conceded a late equaliser to Ipswich on Saturday.

Tractor Boys captain Sam Morse saw a deflected effort sail into the top corner to snatch a point for the visitors in additional time.

Martin bemoaned his side’s failure to carry out the detail in the final minutes, suggesting that anxiety took over having performed so well up to that point.

Watching the goal back, former Wales captain Williams explained: “He’s got a point because it’s a real sickener for Southampton.

“It’s come from something he would have expected better from. There was a really good defensive header from Harwood-Bellis.

“Then Armstrong had a decision. He needed to put pressure on the ball and he didn’t. Aribo lets the runner run off him.

“That’s really disappointing is Southampton had four defenders inside the post but Hirst still gets a header right in the middle of the goal.

“It leads to a corner, which they clear with a header, but there is nobody on the edge of the box. You always have at least one player on the edge of the box.

“I’m not sure why there isn’t a Southampton player there. Yes, they go and press the ball. Can they be a bit more brave? Yes, they can.

“I can see why Russell Martin is disappointed because they get the first contact but then they don’t do enough after it.”
