FORMER Saints goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga saved three penalties to help Girona secure a late 2-1 win over Athletic Club.

Gazzaniga, 32, now playing in Spain, produced saves to deny three separate Athletic players from the spot.

He first dived to his left in the first half to prevent Álex Berenguer's effort from finding the bottom corner at 0-0.

In the second half, with the score now 1-1, he got his legs in the way of Iñaki Williams' poorly hit penalty, which was hit down the middle.

The Argentine was adjudged to have left his line too early and the penalty was ordered to be retaken following a VAR check.

Unfazed by the prospect of facing a third penalty and a third penalty taker, Gazzaniga again used his legs to deny former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera.

In a cruel twist of fate for the away side, Gazzaniga's Girona secured the win in the 99th minute when Cristhian Stuani scored from the spot.

Gazzaniga joined Southampton from Gillingham in 2012 and went on to make 23 appearances for the club.

He later departed to join Tottenham Hotspur, seeing him reunite with former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino.
