SAINTS boss Russell Martin insists Shea Charles' loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday will be "so good" for the young midfielder's development.
Charles, 20, has quickly established himself as a key player for Danny Rohl's Owls in the Championship having joined them on a season-long loan.
The Northern Ireland international, who has earned rave reviews from his boss, teammates and supporters, notched his first senior goal last weekend, helping Wednesday to a late 2-1 win over Coventry.
Martin pointed out the importance of this loan, stressing that regular game time has allowed Charles to learn more than he would have as an "option" in the Premier League.
Wednesday captain Bannan, 34, praised Charles' willingness to do the dirty work, freeing the former Scotland international to become a bigger attacking threat.
“I’ve been able to attack a lot more because I’ve realised quickly that he’s a boy that plays beyond his years and age,” Bannan said.
Martin, who played for Scotland alongside the former Aston Villa midfielder, is impressed by Charles' loan performances and believes the likes of Bannan can help the youngster improve.
"He's probably doing Baz's running," Martin quipped when speaking to the Daily Echo. "What is he now, 34? I'm pretty sure Shea has made his job easier.
"He will also give him the ball with a lot of love, care and detail as well. We watched him play against Bristol City and he did some really good things.
"He's learning - and this is why it will be so important for him, rather than being in and around the first team as an option because the Premier League is such a big jump.
"He's there, he's learning and he's playing in really big games. This loan period will be so good for him.
"We are really pleased for him. I'm also very pleased for Barry. Baz is an outstanding footballer, one of the most talented ones I've played with.
"He's still going strong. People like him, Josh Windass, all those guys that have experience will help Shea a lot.
"I hope Shea is enjoying it. Gilly (assistant manager Matt Gill) has spoken to him a fair bit and he seems to be enjoying it. He's got to keep going and keep growing."
