SAINTS hero Matt Le Tissier scored a penalty with the last kick of regulation time in an entertaining charity match between Saints Legends and Russell Martin XI.

Russell Martin's side took victory after the 4-4 draw as a skied Theo Walcott penalty handed Elliot Ward the chance to have the decisive kick in the shootout.

St Mary's Stadium played host to two teams of former footballing stars, pulled together by the likes of Glenn Cockerill - and Saints boss Martin himself.

A front three of Rickie Lambert, Walcott and Shane Long for the Saints Legends team promised to be one of the most dangerous frontlines of the season.

Ahead of the match, recently retired Walcott signed hats and shirts for young fans while Jose Fonte and Franny Benali posed a formidable autograph partnership.

Eastleigh boss Kelvin Davis started in net, less than 24 hours after leaving Silverlake Stadium, with Morgan Schneiderlin protecting his defence.

In opposition, Grant Holt and Wes Hoolahan starred from Martin's Norwich City days in another team rich in familiar names - which included Martin in defence.

The match and prize raffle were set to raise money for three charities in Saints Foundation, The Russell Martin Foundation, and The Ex-Saints Association.

Martin played the pantomime villain as he was booed every time he touched it in the early stages, which reached a crescendo when he slipped over less than five minutes in.

He had the first laugh, however, when a cross from Simon Lappin forced a Fonte own goal amid miscommunication with Davis in the box.

Lambert should have levelled with a penalty but miraculously saw it saved by Jimmy Walker after Le Tissier had run onto the pitch from the bench in an attempt to take it.

Walcott did level from range, moments after an in-game interview with goalkeeper Davis took place while play was ongoing - a sign of the times, perhaps.

An Elliott Bennett thunder strike then beat Davis, who stood out in the pink Saints third kit but appeared to fill a bit less of the goal than he used to.

Davis was helpless to stop Russell Martin XI's third too, as former Canaries midfield star Bradley Johnson characteristically rifled into the roof of the net from 30 yards.

Martin joked he was trying to let Saints score at half-time but turned the ball off the line minutes into the second half, putting to bed that friendly suggestion.

The boss was withdrawn after 60 minutes and limped across the dugout to meet young supporters, who rapidly amassed an army on the advertising boards.

Martin spent the entire rest of the match signing autographs and taking photographs, slowly making his way through the ever-growing queue.

It took a worldie to beat man of the match goalkeeper Walker and substitute James Beattie provided to reduce the deficit to 3-2 15 minutes from time.

Competition-winner Craig Swanborough lived the dream as he added Martin's fourth, before academy graduate Drew Surman again pulled Saints Legends back to one behind.

Legend Le Tissier's substitution after a rigorous warm-up, which involved a few arm stretches and touches of the toes, inspired Saints to the comeback.

He converted a contentious 91st-minute penalty to make it 4-4 and force a shootout, in which kit-man Mark Forbes converted with an audacious Panenka spot-kick.

Swanborough saw his penalty saved by Bart Bialkowski but Beattie and Walcott's misses handed Ward the chance to win it for Martin's side.
