Martin hints at Bella-Kotchap decision not to play in Saints under-21s

The German has previously turned down the opportunity to play for the youth team despite making just one senior appearance this season.

Bella-Kotchap, 22, took to social media earlier this season to state "I am just waiting for my chance" while Martin insists there has been no fallout.

Martin insisted no player should be forced to play with the under-21s and reaffirmed his belief that the decision ultimately comes down to them.

The likes of Joe Lumley, Ronnie Edwards, Jack Stephens, Juan Larios, Ryan Manning, Sam Amo-Ameyaw and Ross Stewart have all featured. 

"We've had a few playing already but I never force anyone to play in the under 21s," Martin told the Daily Echo, ahead of facing Man City.

"I think we can have a conversation about it and always make sure they understand why we want them to, but it's also their prerogative to say no.

"They're not being brought here to play for the under 21s. Some people think that's right, some people think that's wrong but they're men - they're human beings.

"They have a choice. Sometimes I'll tell them I think it's for the best they play to try and get them back in the team, to keep fitness or coming back from injury.

"They always have a say in it - so the guys who have played it's always been their choice, they've been given the choice and they've made the choice to play."

Four senior players are set to feature for Simon Rusk's side in the Premier League 2 clash with Crystal Palace at Staplewood this evening (7pm).

Bella-Kotchap was looking for a permanent move away from the club this summer but saw a transfer to Hoffenheim fall through after a medical.

The Daily Echo suggested it would be harder for frozen-out Bella-Kotchap to force his way into Martin's plans if he is turning down Premier League 2 minutes.

"Yeah - but at the minute, it's not even a worry really - people will have the option for it and it'll be down to them," responded Martin. 

"We've got four playing tomorrow and also it's dictated to by the rules and the fact we can't have too many guys playing who are over age.

"We also have a lot of really good young players who need to play so we don't want to fill it every single week with loads of first-team squad players.

"I think there is a lot that comes into it but I also think that it's a process everyone's really comfortable with."
