HAMPSHIRE pace bowler Chris Wood has been named as Hampshire Hawks’ captain for the inaugural Global Super League in Guyana.

The left-arm is Hampshire’s all-time leading T20 wicket-taker, with 191 scalps to his name, and is the fourth-leading wicket-taker in Vitality Blast history.

Club captain James Vince will not feature in the tournament as he is contracted to play for Delhi Bulls in the Abu Dhabi T10 competition which runs from November 21 to December 2, having signed a deal to play in the UAE before the Global Super League's confirmation.

Wood said: “It’s a great privilege to captain Hampshire in the Global Super League. I had one game of it a few years ago, and I’m really looking forward to getting out in Guyana and captaining the team.”

Wood made his T20 debut for the club in 2010, against Kent, and has won five white ball trophies with the club – including all three T20 trophies in 2010, 2012, and 2022.

For his outstanding service to Hampshire Cricket, Wood was awarded a testimonial year for 2024, and signed a one-year contract extension earlier in the summer, to see him remain at Utilita Bowl until at least the end of 2025.

In the last three years, Wood has taken 48 wickets at an economy rate of 7.88, with only three seamers in the Vitality Blast having better powerplay and death economy rates than him.

A full Hampshire Hawks squad to compete in the Global Super League will be announced in due course, led by Hampshire bowling coach Graeme Welch.

Welch says he will take a "good blend" of young talent and experience that could include new overseas players, with most Hampshire aces available for selection.

"We're going to take 14 players. We're probably taking an extra seamer, an extra batter and an extra spinner, and then we've got four staff," he said.
