SAINTS legend Matt Le Tissier says the club has nothing to lose when they take on Manchester United in the FA Cup third round.
Jan Poortvliet’s side go into the game as massive underdogs, but Le Tissier said they can be relaxed about the occasion.
The 40-year-old admitted he was sad his first thought on hearing the draw was that it would help the club financially.
But he said he is looking forward to the clash with the English, European and newly crowned world club champions.
“It’s a massive occasion for the club,” he said.
“It’s a shame that the first thing that sprung to my mind when the draw was made was ‘oh, that will help the club out financially.’ “It’s a shame that we’re in that position where we have to think like that.
“There used to be a day when we thought ‘I fancy our chances against them.’ “So it was a bit sad, but it will be great to see the stadium full again.
“Hopefully that will inspire the players, although it didn’t seem to do too much against Nottingham Forest when there was quite a lot in.”
Le Tissier was part of the Saints side that pulled off a massive shock against United in the fourth round of the FA Cup in February 1992.
After a 0-0 draw at the Dell, Saints made the long midweek trip to Old Trafford.
Le Tissier and co forced a 2-2 draw, before dumping Sir Alex Ferguson’s men out on penalties.
Much like that day, Le Tissier believes that, although they are not expected to win, the current crop of players can go into the game without fear.
“They’re huge underdogs, but they’ve got nothing to lose, that’s the great thing,” he said.
“They can be completely relaxed about the whole day.
“Yes, they’re playing against one of the greatest teams in the country at the moment, and probably in Europe, so it’s going to be a challenge.
“Hopefully United won’t pick their full team and give us a bit of a chance.
“But, as I say, they’ve got nothing to lose, so just go out, enjoy it and try to play to the best of your ability.
“It’s a great shop window for people as well.”
