SAINTS keeper Kelvin Davis had to tell Matt Paterson to “shut up” in the dressing room yesterday – in order to stop him apologising.
The young striker was sent off in the first half of the 3-0 FA Cup third round loss for lunging in on Nemanja Vidic with his studs up with Saints already one down.
Paterson was apparently so distraught at seeing the red card that he felt he had to apologise to the entire team.
But Davis said there was nobody putting any blame on him and that Paterson had been doing the right thing in attempting to win the ball.
On what he told him in the dressing room, Davis said: “I just told him to shut up basically!
“He’s sitting in there apologising to the lads, but it’s a challenge as a centre forward that you want him to make.
“You want him to try and win the ball high up the pitch.
“He’s a guy who puts maximum effort in, so I feel sorry for him.
“But, again, it’s something as a young lad that he’ll learn from and in these games you’ve got to be careful with tackles.”
