NICK Holmes made a sentimental trip down memory lane when he visited St Mary’s last Sunday.
The man who helped Saints beat Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup final was an interested spectator for the 3-0 third round defeat.
It was only the Salisbury City manager’s second visit to the stadium this season, having previously watched the 1-1 home draw with Coventry in October.
But it hasn’t taken the Dell legend long to see the extent of the problems facing Jan Poortvliet.
“The young boys go out there and do the best they can,” Holmes admitted.
“It’s all right spreading out and passing the ball, but they do look vulnerable to letting in goals.
“They need some toughness and some experience to help them out.
“It would be great to have that, but toughness and experience costs money and the club don’t have that."
