SAINTS will be able to call on a second teenager with competitive first-team experience for tonight’s FA Youth Cup tie against Watford.
Welsh Under-19 forward Kayne McLaggon returns from suspension and will join midfielder Oscar Gobern, 17, who has also featured for the first team this season, in the squad for the fourth round clash at St Mary’s (kick-off 7pm).
McLaggon, 18, who missed Saints’ 3-1 win against Derby County in the third round due to his ban, made his first-team debut as a second half sub against Plymouth on Boxing Day and has made three more appearances from the bench since.
Meanwhile Gobern, who did play in last round victory, has made five first-team starts and had a further substitute run-out.
While stressing that he has good quality players right the way through his squad, Under-18s coach Stewart Henderson added that he was “very happy” to have both McLaggon and Gobern at his disposal tonight.
“It is good that Kayne is back in the fold,” he said.
“Since his suspension he has made inroads into the first team squad and when he has come on he has done well.
“The same with Oscar Gobern. He has played a couple of games for the first team recently which is great for him and for us that they have progressed to that level.
“They are two decent players, both with very good qualities.
“Kayne with his pace and his finishing and Oscar has a calmness, is a good user of the ball and can get up and down the pitch.”
Henderson also hopes his side will be helped tonight by the fact they have already shown they can handle the task of playing at St Mary’s. They did just that in the extra-time win against Derby.
“I always think there is a bit more pressure in these games when you are at home,” he said.
“It’s a common fact that sometimes players can freeze a little bit but that experience of playing at home in the last round will do them the world of good.”
Henderson, though, believes his side will have to start better if they are to reach the fifth round where they would face Crystal Palace or Ipswich, who meet next Tuesday.
Ipswich beat Saints in the 2005 Youth Cup final, the only time in the latter’s history they have got that far.
“Hopefully we will start better. Against Derby we didn’t play very well in the first half and our keeper Andrej Pernecky was excellent,” he recalled.
“He did really well and kept us in the game.
“But we improved in the second half and, although we conceded the equaliser late on, when it came to extra-time we shaded it.
“It was a tough game and Watford will be the same. They had a very good win against Leyton Orient in the last round (4-0 away).
