JAMIE White was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg after Saints Reserves’ 4-2 win over Aldershot last night.
The striker collapsed to the floor in the 27th minute, screaming in agony, after going for a 50/50 ball with visiting keeper Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz.
Paramedics gave him oxygen and White was taken to Southampton General Hospital.
Saints were last night waiting on the results of X-rays, but had been informed by doctors that White, who had just returned from a loan spell at Shrewsbury, had probably broken his leg, just above the ankle.
The injury marred what was an otherwise successful night for Mark Wotte’s totesport.com Combination central division leaders.
However, it did not start well, as Rhys Day slammed in Charlie Ide’s cutback within the first two minutes to give the Shots a surprise lead at Staplewood.
Saints were level in the 18th minute, when right-back Jamie Hatch robbed Dean Howell of the ball inside the box and, from a very tight angle, curled a left-footed shot past Jaimez-Ruiz at his near post.
Saints were then forced into a reshuffle, after White was stretchered off.
Kyle Davies came on in his place and went to left-back, with Ryan Smith moving up front, Joseph Mills onto the left and Jack Boyle to the right.
Saints deservedly took the lead in the 37th minute, as Smith’s first-time ball found Hatch down the right.
His cutback was blocked inside the area, but he reacted quickest and curled the loose ball brilliantly into the far corner.
The impressive Boyle cut inside Howell in the 41st minute and slammed a thunderous left-foot shot against the post from 20 yards.
Romain Gasmi’s 25-yard effort two minutes later hit the crossbar.
Boyle and Smith played a neat one-two inside the box in the first minute of injury time, but the 18-year-old winger from Jersey fired just wide.
Louie Soares almost drew Aldershot level with the last kick of the half, but his left-foot strike from 20 yards flashed just over.
Saints doubled their lead ten minutes after the restart.
Boyle again caused panic in the visiting defence, cutting in from the right and firing a low, hard shot on goal.
Jaimez-Ruiz kept it out, but Mills was first to the rebound to slot the ball under the keeper.
However, Saints let Aldershot back into the match two minutes later, as Tommy Forecast came for a free kick, but was beaten to the ball by the head of John Grant to pull the visitors within one.
Boyle was denied a fine goal in the 63rd minute, when Jaimez-Ruiz tipped his shot away from the top corner after a marvellous solo run.
Paul Wotton’s header from Simon Gillett’s resulting corner bounced off the ground and against the bar.
Aldershot almost levelled the game in the 71st minute, but Gillett was on the line to clear a goalbound header following a corner for the visitors.
The win was sealed three minutes later, though, as Olly Lancashire rose majestically to meet Gillett’s corner and thump a header into the bottom corner.
Forecast had to make a good save to tip Soares’ 20-yard drive over the bar a minute later.
But Saints could have extended their lead further, only to be denied yet again by the woodwork, as Gillett’s ferocious drive from 25 yards was brilliantly tipped onto the post by Jaimez-Ruiz.
SAINTS: Forecast, Hatch (Imudia 78), Wotton, Lancashire, Mills, Gillett, Smith, Pulis, White (Davies 32), Gasmi (Scott 69), Boyle.
Unused subs: Pernecky, Dunford.
