SAINTS’ new head coach Mark Wotte has outlined his vision for the club.
The 48-year-old has taken over from fellow Dutchman Jan Poortvliet, who resigned on Friday.
Wotte, who joined the club last summer as academy director and reserve team manager, has already met with the players and held his first training session.
He will conduct his first press conference as head coach at St Mary’s today.
Wotte told the Daily Echo last night that there would be changes under his leadership.
A move away from the 4-2-1-2-1 system that Poortvliet persevered with all season is likely.
The board have also given permission for a new signing to be made, while the club’s experienced players will be given an increased role.
Above all, Wotte has demanded 100 per cent commitment to the cause from his squad.
“We met the players on Saturday morning and just explained the situation and that we felt sorry for Jan,” he said.
“We said it was not only Jan to blame, but that all the players and staff have to look in the mirror at themselves as well.
“But we told them that we as a staff are confident we can change our luck and we can win games to avoid relegation.
“I said to the players we will be very strong to those that don’t show 100 per cent commitment, devotion and dedication as a professional player to Southampton FC.”
Many supporters have been clamouring for a return to a 4-4-2 formation, and Wotte said that was an option he is considering.
“Because of the table, we have to be realistic and say that 4-4-2 is an option, as well as 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 as well,” he said.
“We have to be realistic and play the system that will give us the best results, without being predictable for the other team.
“You have got to have consistency in your tactics, but maybe you can get a little bit predictable as well.
“The board said I am free to pick my team and the way we want to play. It’s my call and I can do as I like."
