DAVID McGoldrick is relishing playing a role where he is facing the opponents’ goal rather than in one with his back to it.
One of the major changes Mark Wotte has made since taking over as head coach has been to the system Saints play, which is now a slight variation of a traditional 4-4-2.
In front of a flat back four Wotte has been fielding a diamond-shaped midfield behind two strikers.
And McGoldrick, who spent most of the first half of the season playing as a lone frontman under Jan Poortvliet, has been the man handed the responsibility of playing at the top of that midfield diamond, in the hole behind the front two.
It is a role the 21 year-old forward is comfortable in, and enjoys, having played there as he made his way through the Saints ranks.
And it is also a role that many of the club’s coaching staff feel is his best position.
Ahead of tomorrow’s home clash with out-of-form QPR, McGoldrick said: “Most of the time in the youth team and the reserves that has been where I have played.
“A lot of the staff said that has been my best position, in the hole between the strikers and the midfield, because I can link things and push on as another third man.
“I like it in there, I do like it, I am expressing myself more, running around more and getting on the ball more facing goal.
“I feel I am bit better facing goal than with my back to goal.
“But it’s a learning curve for me so I have got to keep pushing on.
“I feel I am doing okay in there.”
