Saints’ 1976 FA Cup winning back four will be reunited 33 years on from that glorious day at Wembley to help ‘Save our Saints’.

Peter Rodrigues, the Cup winning skipper, Mel Blyth, Jim Steele and David Peach have all confirmed they will be part of the Saints All-Stars match on Sunday, May 17 at St Mary’s.

They have been drafted in by 1976 boss Lawrie McMenemy who is organising the fundraiser along with Mike Osman.

Other Cup winning stalwarts that have also confirmed their attendance are Nick Holmes and Paul Gilchrist while squad men Paul Bennett and Hughie Fisher will also be involved.

There is the possibility that Mick Channon will also join the list if his diary permits.

Sadly, Cup final keeper Ian Tuner will be a reluctant absentee as he is working away in Malaysia at the time of the game.

McMenemy said: “It will be fantastic to see so many of the FA Cup final team together once again.

“Hopefully the fans will want to turn out to remember happier days and honour those players as well as help the club.

“My plea again is to donate just £20 to attend the match and get something in return.

“The man or woman on the terrace cannot afford just to give more and more money for nothing in return.

“So this should be a fun day for everybody with a 12 noon kick-off and it’s great so many players are willing to give up their time.”

The 1976 FA Cup finalists are bound to prove a big draw for the game with opportunities so rare to see so many of the squad all together at the same time.

A couple of modern day Saints legends in the shape of Matt Le Tissier and Claus Lundekvam are also due to figure in the match with plenty more names to be announced in the Daily Echo between now and May 17. Osman has confirmed that Royle Family actor Ralf Little, who has played semi pro football for Maidstone United and Edgware Town, will be at St Mary’s.

TV star Tommy Walsh will play if his commitments allow. The idea of the game is to raise much needed funds to help the club continue to survive while administrator Mark Fry tries to find a buyer.

There is a separate account set-up for the proceeds from the game which is overseen by an independent committee.

That means that should the club have found a buyer by May 17 and the financial position have been secured then the money raised will go to a worthwhile Saints related cause so the community as a whole will benefit.
