SNOOKER Town Champion Mike Finn insists he will not play in next season's planned Super League.
Finn, from Premier champions Woolston Cons A, is the first high-profile name to publicly refuse to compete.
“It’s not for me,” he said. “I won’t play in it.”
Finn was speaking ahead of the Southampton & District Social Clubs League's annual delegates meeting to be held at Shirley Working Men's Social Club on Thursday at 8.15pm.
The 23-year-old also called on the league to “update” the Town Championship and he added his weight to the growing campaign to extend the early rounds to best-of-five.
Finn said: “If you had a best-of-three world championship the best player wouldn’t win nine times out of ten.
“This is the most prestigious tournament we have in Southampton and district. It should never be three frames.
“The standard is so high now it needs to be updated.
“It is THE thing to win. It’s our Pontin's festival; it’s our world championship.
“It merits being taken to a different level. Maybe even making the final a best-of-nine and putting it into a venue where you can fit more people, perhaps get a sponsor and sell tickets.
“People love snooker. The modern game has arrived.”
