Saints boss Alan Pardew says his Saints side were naive after going behind to Pompey.
But the manager was pleased with his side's performance until Portsmouth pulled away with their late goals.
Speaking after Saints 4-1 FA Cup defeat at St Mary's Pardew said: "We gave a really good account of ourselves in terms of the first 60-70 minutes and we kept it really tight.
"Unfortunately when we conceded the second goal we chased it naively some what.
"We had some fantastic performances not least Ricky Lambert and Adam Lallana. They were absolutely fantastic for us."
The manager added: ''We tried to play a controlled game and not to open it up,'' he said.
''We did well with that. We were very disappointed not to be leading at half-time, David James was terrific, and it was evenly poised.
Psychologically, scoring first would have been tough for Portsmouth.
''I think next time we'll play them we'll be in a stronger position.
"We are a lot closer than the team that played because we had players unavailable.''
