Ryde lead the race for the men's senior fours championship after BTC faltered again at Poole Town Regatta.

With Christchurch, Ryde and BTC away to a good start in the twice-round-the-course final, a classic race loomed.

The crews were level as they shaped for their first turns then disaster for the BTC crew. Their boat veered off line inside their buoy, and they were disqualified.

Ryde were not quite as sharp as usual on the turns and cox Anna Nolan kept edging the Christchurch boat in front. Ryde's Nick Pike, Mark Jenner, Matt Allsop, Ian Hayden (stroke) and Penny Glazzard (cox) had to raise their rate to pull away to take their third win of the season by one and a half lengths.

In the junior/senior event, Southsea scored a three-lengths win over Poole after missing last week's racing.

BTC were lucky that Itchen Imperial A didn't benefit from their absence in the junior fours. Imperial's win wasn't rewarded by a championship point due to lack of entries.

Christchurch novices won by half a length from Ryde and Poole senior pair Pete Jacobs and Ray Wilson dashed Southampton's chance of keeping in touch with absent championship leaders Lymington A to win their first race of the season.

The ladies' senior fours seems to be settling into the expected pattern with champions, Coalporters well in control in their twice-round final, beating Poole by a comfortable six lengths.

In the ladies' junior fours final, Christchurch completed a hat-trick of wins to lead in their title quest by two points with a controlled rate suiting the blustery conditions.

Coalporters ladies' novices C Mitchell, E Harris, J Hamilton, L Reiman (stroke) and Penny Glazzard (cox) completed a hat-trick for their club with their season's first win.

Southampton juniors showed a raw enthusiasm that saw them six lengths clear of Itchen Imperial. Consolation for Itchen was that their ladies' crew had an easy win after Coalporters missed their turn.

In the J16 sculling events M Carey of Coalporters mastered the conditions to gain a runaway win over A Dennison of Itchen Imperial for the men and Lisa Frampton of Poole continued her dominance for the ladies. Results: Men's senior fours: 1 Ryde, 2 Christchurch.
