Rob Hayles again used his vast experience to his advantage when he added the latest round ofthe national elite circuit series to his growing list of victories this year.
The local professional has spent most of his years, since he was a teenager, competing around the world on the road and track, writes Martin McCrossan.
After stints racing for the top flight Cofidis professional squad, Hayles now competes as a solo rider on the road during the summer months.
As a single rider coming up against strong squads such as Plowman Craven and ReCycling.co.uk, the former world champion from Cowplain near Portsmouth is seriously outnumbered, but it doesn't seem to cause him problems.
Never a rider who is afraid to attack, the latest round in Beverley in Yorkshire was no different. As a preview to the following days national road race championship all the countries best teams and riders were present.
The race was full on from the start and the KLR sponsored rider was part of the strongest looking breakaway of the entire race when he joined former Tour de France rider Malcolm Elliott (Plowman Craven RT), Evan Oliphant (ReCycling.co.uk), Karl Freeman, Warwick Spence (London Dynamo) off the front. This group managed seven laps in the lead before once again being reeled in by the chasing pack.
Even a late attack by Irish Milk Race winner Kristian House was reeled in with only two laps remaining. Hayles used everyone else around him for a sprint lead out and crossed the line arms aloft for a well deserved victory.
Graham Harman continued his dominance of the Sotonia Cycling Club time trials with another victory in the latest round. Harman, who is virtually unbeaten this season, crossed the line in 25min 07secs, with clubmate David Koss 48 seconds behind in second.
Harman's usual rival, Stuart Martingale, was unlucky to puncture and, even after changing the tyre, he still managed to finish in seventh place.
Andy Rivett (Sotonia CC) won his first ever open time trial on June 11 at the Reading CC 50. Rivett covered the course in a time of 1.55.08.
Making the most of his good form, Rivett then finished tenth in the National University Time Trial Championship in 56min 25sec in an event won by Winchester rider Danny Axford (Artic RT).
Sotonia Cycling Club are also organising two road races this summer. The Heath Road Race series starts at 7pm on July 4, at Applemore Recreation centre under TLI rules over a New Forest circuit that is both fast and challenging. The Drinkwater/Marriner Memorial Road race is on July 16 on the Longwood Circuit near Owslebury, run under British Cycling regulations. The race is for second, third and fourth category riders over 83km, starting at 10am.
