Wolves boss Glenn Hoddle could provide Matt Oakley with a new challenge after the long-serving midfielder quit Saints yesterday.
George Burley announced at lunchtime yesterday that Oakley has turned down a new one-year contract.
Oakley first signed for Saints as a 16-year-old, having been released by Arsenal, in 1993.
In his time at the club he rose through the ranks to play a starring role in the centre of the team's midfield and was a driving force in the club reaching the FA Cup final in 2003.
He started 283 league and cup games, made 28 sub appearances, and scored 20 goals.
Now Hoddle one of Oakley's numerous Saints managers could step up his interest.
The Wolves chief, inset right, is desperate to sign a holding midfielder to complement the flair of Mark Davies, Rohan Ricketts and Dennis Rosa.
And Hoddle revealed earlier this week that he is almost certainly going to have to look to bring in players on free transfers.
