SAINTS legend Francis Benali has outlined the reason why Alan Pardew MUST stay on as manager at St Mary’s.
Chairman Nicola Cortese is unhappy that despite handing Pardew £3m for new players Saints have failed to finish in the top six in League One.
As a result, reports suggest Pardew could be sacked.
But ex-Saints boss Lawrie McMenemy yesterday came out fighting in defence of Pardew, calling on Cortese to get “right behind” his manager or risk losing him to another club.
Now ex-fans’ favourite Benali has thrown his support behind the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy winning boss.
The fact Saints had 11 permanent managers in less than a decade prior to Pardew’s arrival last summer helped provide the unstable foundations which resulted in two relegations in five seasons.
“It’s vital they keep hold of him,” Benali insisted.
“At football clubs, and especially Southampton in recent years, we’ve seen what a lack of continuity, whether it’s players or managers, can bring.
“We were always known for being a very stabilised club.
“Continuity of staff, certain players and management goes towards that as well.
“It’s vital that Alan Pardew stays, because he’s been an integral part of the success we’ve had this year."
