RICKIE Lambert needs one more goal this afternoon to become the highest scoring Football League striker of the Millennium.
The Saints ace goes into today’s final game of 2009/10 against relegated Southend at St Mary’s having belted 35 goals in all competitions this season.
He netted for Bristol Rovers on the opening day before joining Saints for £1m 48 hours later.
Lambert – who the Daily Echo can reveal today is the runaway winner of our fans’ Player of the Season award – has scored 28 League One goals for Saints in 43 starts and a further six cup goals in 13 starts.
It is that sort of form that has resulted in increasing speculation about higher division sides being interested in him and Scottish giants Celtic were yesterday the latest club to be linked with Lambert.
