SPEEDY Mountbatten schoolgirl Amy Matthews has been ruled out of the weekend's English Schools' Track & Field Championships.
The 15-year-old Team Southampton sprinter from North Baddesley had been due to compete in the intermediate girls' 100 metres at the two-day feast of athletics, which begins in Gateshead tomorrow, but she is still suffering from an injury sustained in the recent schools' inter-counties meet at Southampton.
Matthews, who has a personal best of 12.4 seconds for the 100m, finished sixth in her junior girls' 200m heat at last year's English Schools' event in Birmingham.
Eileen Williams, past chairman of the Hampshire Schools' AA, reported: "I think Amy was hoping to go to the championships and be a bit stronger second time around, but she's tried to run and she can't.
"She's okay walking but when she tried to push off for a start, the injury was no better."
