ENGLAND hockey star Richard Smith insisted the best side hadn't won as England missed out on a bronze medal with a cruel case of déjà vu in Delhi.
Smith and Winchester-born Rob Moore had already endured heartache in their semi-final clash with hosts India - losing out on penalty flicks after the scores were level at 3-3 after extra time.
And it happened all over again today with the bronze medal at stake, the England side again unable to be separated at 3-3 and again losing out on penalties.
But despite failing to follow the women's hockey outfit onto the podium Smith was adamant his side had been hard done to in the Indian capital.
"We know that we are a good team," said Smith, following England's 5-3 penalty loss. "We are confident that we are probably the second best team in the tournament.
"All we needed to do was prove it but unfortunately that hasn't happen and it's a real shame.
