Nigel Adkins says Saints must learn the lessons of their defeat at Huddersfield and realise there is a time and place to pass the ball.
Saints’ five-match unbeaten run came to an end with a 2-0 defeat at the Galpharm, thanks to two first-half Huddersfield goals.
Adkins’ team tried to get the ball down and play from the back but, with their opponents pushed right up on them, they ended up making a string of first-half errors and found themselves too far behind to pull anything back.
He said: “We will debrief this game and learn the lessons from it.
“Everybody can see our team plays good football, in the first half we were prevented from playing good football and we’ve got to remember that when we are away from home we have no divine right to pass the ball about so credit to Huddersfield first half because they pressed us very well.
“I’ve talked at half time saying to the players ‘we are in this situation now and we will talk about the first half when we debrief the game but now it’s about how we can affect the game second half to get back into it.’ “Credit to the players because they showed a great attitude and commitment to get back into it.
“I want us to play football, you can see us playing football but there are times to play out from the back and there are times to play football in the opponent’s half of the pitch.
“Sometimes you can be the masters of your own downfall by trying to pass the ball in areas that maybe aren’t conducive to doing that.”
