SAINTS will be looking for revenge on Saturday against an Oldham side that effectively killed off their play-off hopes last season.
The Latics produced a tenacious display at St Mary’s in April to earn a 0-0 draw that all but ended Saints’ dreams of a top six finish.
The match was the last game in hand that Alan Pardew’s side possessed on the rest of the promotion chasers.
A win would have put them five points back of sixth place, with three matches left in the season.
But Saints failed to break down a resolute Latics team, who were determined to escape with something, as they fought against the drop.
Oldham keeper Darryl Flahavan made some impressive saves, while Saints had a penalty shout turned down and Papa Waigo missed a sitter in injury time.
The result left Saints seven points adrift and needing too much to go right for them.
Pardew and some of the players fuming with referee Kevin Wright after the match, on one of the most deflating nights of the campaign.
But with eighth place Oldham fighting towards the play-offs this season, Saints may well see a more open approach from them on Saturday.
