Nigel Adkins was delighted to see Saints get a monkey off their back as they defeated Oldham 2-1 at St Mary’s.
The victory was the first time this season Saints have scored a goal after falling behind in a league game, never mind coming back to win.
But goals from Jose Fonte and Alex Chamberlain ensured they did just that, much to the delight of the Saints boss.
He said: “We were very disappointed with the goal we gave away – you’ve got to stay with your runners and you’ve got to put a tackle in so that was very poor from ourselves. That made it a little more challenging for us.
“I spoke to the players at half-time and said we’d not come back from behind to score a goal or win a game so that was the challenge for the second half.
“I think the players showed some good character to go and do that so we can forget about that one now so if it does happen again through the course of the season we know we can go and do it.
“Positives are that again we scored two good goals with Alex Chamberlain coming off the bench to score the goal to get us in front, Paul Wotton coming on to make sure we got three points and it was good to get Barney on as well – it’s not about the 11 but about a group.
“I’m delighted for young Alex because we think he’s a massive talent and what about the effort he had towards the end when he hit the post?
“That would have been a fantastic goal and would have been replayed several times.
“He’s got confidence, a great ability and a great future at our football club.”
