Nigel Adkins has revealed he doesn’t name a list of substitutes when he announces his team – instead he names ‘impact players’.

The Saints boss, a great believer in the power of positive thinking, feels that players are on the bench to try and have an impact if they come on.

That can be to either try and get a goal or stop the opposition scoring.

As such, he titles his bench “impact players” to try and underscore the point – which was highlighted by the contribution made by Alex Chamberlain against Oldham.

Adkins said: “We talk to all the players and say it’s not about the 11 players but the group and for people to make an impact.

“When I name the squad I don’t put subs down, I put impact players down. That’s the title for them.

“They have to make sure they make an impact on the game – win it, get us back in it, make sure we don’t lose it, it’s as simple as that.

“Everybody has got to contribute in their own different way and it’s benefited us and it’s a pleasing victory.

“We created several opportunities in the first half and didn’t take them, but went on to win and keep the momentum of winning games at home going.”

Adkins was able to start with Rickie Lambert after he was passed fit to play following the head injury he sustained at Huddersfield last week.

“He’s caused some problems for the opposition in the first half and could have had several himself,” reflected Adkins.

“He gave us a good hour after a week with great medical staff here that made him available for selection.

“Him and Guly did well in patches and that’s a partnership that’s evolving and Barney (Lee Barnard) did ever so well when he came on.”

Saints now move on to face Notts County at Meadow Lane with confidence high.

“It’s another win and the momentum keeps going with us,” said Adkins.

“The players are well aware we have got to keep improving but we’ve shown good character and that’s the important thing.

“We were behind, came from behind and have gone and won – that’s the big positive to come from it.

“The impact players made a contribution – it’s not about the 11, but the group.”
