RICKIE Lambert hopes the 3-1 win at Notts County will spark a run of away victories for Saints.

Yesterday’s result meant the side bounced back from a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Huddersfield the last time they went on the road.

Saints recovered from a goal down at Meadow Lane to eventually take all three points from the Magpies.

And Lambert, who was at the centre of that turnaround, wants to see the team build on the result and produce a sustained run of away success.

“It was a good away win,” said the Saints hitman.

“We don’t want to be like last season when we win one and then lose one.

“We want to be on a constant run, not just at home, but away as well.

“So hopefully this is the beginning of a run of away wins.”

Lambert was definitive when asked about whether he thought the penalty that got Saints back into the game should have been given.

“I was right next to the ref and it was a blatant pen,” he said of John Thompson’s tackle, which brought Lee Barnard down when clean through.

The spot kick, midway through the second half, allowed Lambert to equalise and saw Thompson receive a straight red card.

It proved the perfect platform for Saints to go on and win the match.

“Barney’s put his body in between the ball and the man, and the man’s just gone through him,” Lambert continued.

“The ball hasn’t even moved, so it’s a blatant pen.”

And Lambert said referee Jock Waugh was right to dismiss Thompson.

“I would never call for a red, I would never do that, but I have to say it was a red card,” said Lambert.

The forward added: “We were disappointed with the first half, but full credit to Notts County, I thought they were brilliant.

“But I thought we came out in the second half terrific.”
