SHREWSBURY boss Graham Turner described himself and his team as “heartbroken” after their late FA Cup defeat at Saints.
Two injury-time goals saw Nigel Adkins’ men advance into today’s second round draw.
But it had looked for so long as if Saints weren’t going to be able to break down their disciplined League Two opponents and a replay at Gay Meadow seemed all but certain.
While Saints did enough to deserve the result, it was still a sickener for the Shrews.
"It is heartbreaking when you have worked so hard and been so disciplined and not come away with anything,” said Turner.
"The game is cruel and I felt for 90 minutes we had been disciplined and done okay.
"There was a big threat from set-pieces from Southampton, which I felt we had dealt with, and we are then almost looking forward to the replay a week next Tuesday.
"It is hard to swallow but what we need to now is pick ourselves up, and I've been in the game long enough to know these things happen.
"But to concentrate and do everything right for 90 minutes and then to lose it in injury time is a cruel blow."
