NIGEL Adkins faces several selection dilemmas ahead of his side’s mammoth 650- mile round trip to Carlisle.

The Saints boss rested star players Jose Fonte and Rickie Lambert for last weekend’s FA Cup tie with Shrewsbury.

But after Saints’ 2-0 win, he now must decide whether to put them straight back in the team.

The likelihood is that they will both win back their places.

Fonte is expected to come back in for Radhi Jaidi who stood in admirably alongside Dan Seaborne against the Shrews.

Lambert is set to renew his attacking partnership with Lee Barnard with Guly do Prado likely to miss out.

Do Prado was given the nod for the trip to Huddersfield last month, but did not have one of his better games.

He will probably be sacrificed for Barnard’s industry for another tough away game at Carlisle.

Saints have yet to lose this season when Lambert and Barnard have started together.

David Connolly, who came off the bench to grab a vital goal against Shrewsbury, is set to be amongst the substitutes again.

The other major dilemma for Adkins is who to start on the right hand side of midfield.

Jason Puncheon was left out of the squad to face Shrewsbury last weekend, but has played in virtually every game this season.

Adkins instead gave the nod to Alex Chamberlain, who subsequently played the first half for the under- 18s in their FA Youth Cup win over Thurrock on Tuesday.

He now needs to decide whether for a tough game like tomorrow’s trip to Brunton Park he will continue with the pace, youth and exuberance of Chamberlain or opt for the experience of Puncheon who is so used to life at League One level.

Another man who was given last weekend off was Morgan Schneiderlin.

The Frenchman, who is one yellow card away from a one match ban, was left out in favour of Dean Hammond and loanee Richard Chaplow who are building a strong pairing.

Schneiderlin looks set to be recalled to the squad but will probably have to settle for a place on the bench.

Veteran Paul Wotton was the reserve central midfielder for the Shrewsbury tie, but he has since gone on loan to League Two Oxford United until the end of December.
