Nigel Adkins is facing an anxious wait to see if Richard Chaplow will be fit for Saturday’s FA Cup second round tie with Cheltenham.

Morgan Schneiderlin came back into the starting line-up for last night’s game against Brighton due to an achilles injury to Chaplow and promptly picked up his fifth booking of the season meaning a one match ban that will rule him out of the weekend’s game.

Saints will be hoping Chaplow can regain fitness.

If he cannot, and with Paul Wotton out on loan to Oxford, it is likely that Oscar Gobern will be drafted in to partner Dean Hammond in the centre of midfield.

Adkins recently said that he considers Gobern his fourth choice central midfielder and had him on the bench for the game against the Seagulls.

Adkins said: “He (Chaplow) was due to play but he’s picked up a little bit of an achilles problem.

“Fair play to him because after we did our work in the morning he said he could be struggling.

“What he didn’t want to do was play five minutes and then come off and that’s great testament to him for the awareness of what the game was all about.

“That was good of him and good that we were able to have Morgan in there.

“I took him off towards the end because he had a yellow card and the way the dugout was going they would try and get everybody sent off but maybe that’s the European or South American mentality towards playing football.”
