FORMER Saints boss Alan Pardew has emerged as the number one candidate to take over at Newcastle, after Chris Hughton was surprisingly sacked today.
Pardew is reported to be "strongly interested" in the St James's Park job, with all the major bookies making him their odds-on favourite.
The 49-year-old was sacked by Saints chairman Nicola Cortese at the end of August.
