Former Pompey boss Steve Claridge blamed Guly Do Prado’s defending for Saints’ failure to win at Fratton Park.
Guly allowed Joel Ward to beat him in the air, Ward levelling Rickie Lambert’s opener with five minutes left.
“Look at how Joel Ward has attacked the ball, what should have been a 50/50 ball ended up being 80/20 in Ward’s favour,” he admitted.
Claridge’s fellow BBC pundit, ex-Saint Alan Shearer, said Nigel Adkins and co will be hugely disappointed they hadn’t claimed their first league win at Fratton Park since 1976.
“Saints had the chances to put themselves out of sight,” he remarked.
“Southampton would probably have taken a point beforehand, but to be winning with just five minutes left, they will be bitterly disappointed.
“It will feel like two points dropped rather than one gained.”
