Big time boxing is returning to Southampton with two local fighters in line for major title bouts.

Wayne Batten is organising his first show since splitting with his previous funder and rebranding his stable under the Batten’s Boxing banner.

And two of his brightest talents are hoping to be wearing belts come the end of the show at Southampton Guildhall on Friday, March 1.

Matty Tew will top the bill by defending the International Masters lightweight title he bagged against Ruben Movsesian.

Meanwhile, his stablemate, Jon Fernandes, pictured below, who won the Southern Area super bantamweight title in dramatic fashion against Jamie Speight at the last Guildhall show in November, is also hoping to secure an International Masters shot.

Though discussions regarding that fight are ongoing, the Fernandes camp are optimistic of making it happen.

Also set to be on the bill is a milestone bout for Tony Hill.

The Southampton boxer has made the decision to step up to super middleweight in the hope of gate crashing a more open division and will have his first contest at his new weight on the bill.

Also scheduled to be fighting are home grown prospects Joe Pigford, who won his debut fight inside 30 seconds last time out, Steve Lynch and Alex Dilmaghani.

There could also be a debut for Jake Gosling, the Bournemouth youngster who is being mentored by former English middleweight champion Steve Bendall.

Batten said: “It’s great to be lining up another big show in Southampton.

“The feedback we had from the last one in November was really positive, in fact it was a bit overwhelming.

“To have professional boxing back at the Guildhall is a big thing for the city because it’s a very prestigious venue.

“In November there was a lot of support from the boxing community and the public in general and I hope they felt rewarded for it because it was a great night with some cracking fights and we are hoping for even better this time round.

“We are going to be careful with the amount of shows we put on because we want to be known for quality rather than quantity.

“That’s why we have taken our time and made sure we have all the local lads fighting in front of their own friends, family and fans in their own backyard and we are hopeful that at least two of them will fight for titles.

“Matty Tew is set to top the bill and it will be a big night for him.

“He won the belt on the road and so to defend it in Southampton will be a bit of a dream come true for him and will hopefully top off a very special night.”
