Lewie Edmondson has been handed a dream call up to represent England in one of the most prestigious amateur boxing tournaments in the world.
The 17-year-old Golden Ring ABC fighter, pictured below, has been selected to take part in the European Championships in Rotterdam, Holland, in August.
It caps an amazing season for Edmondson who had never got to a final before this year but has now won three tournaments, including the Junior ABAs and the Three Nations.
Edmondson was invited to a training day with selectors and impressed so much he was taken to the junior tournament at the expense of a GB fighter.
His proud coach, Stuart Gill, said: “It’s an amazing achievement for Lewie and our club.
“He has worked so hard this season and is getting his rewards.
“Lewie’s always had the ability, but had such bad luck. A couple of years ago he came off a motorbike and broke his collarbone, before the start of last year’s tournaments he got the mumps and ended up in hospital for two months.“This season he hasn’t had any problems, has worked really hard and has done amazingly.
“To get picked ahead of a GB boxer is a massive achievement and we are all really proud of him.
“For us it’s also the third fighter we have had in this tournament. James Richardson was in the same event about ten years ago and Iain Weaver in the seniors about four years ago.
“For our small little club that is fantastic.”
