Chris Hobbs is set to walk into the lion’s den as he takes on Sam Couzens in a top local boxing derby.

The Southampton former Army man will face the Titchfield-based fighter at the Pyramids in Portsmouth on Saturday, September 20.

Though the two do have plenty of mutual respect, it is nonetheless something of grudge match as it has been a long time in waiting for the bout to be made.

And, of course, there are also local bragging rights up for grabs.

Hobbs said: “It’s a local derby so that should get the crowd going and it’s a good step up in opponent.

“I see Sam as very game and I respect him, but come September 20 I will beat him to show people where I belong.

“I wanted a step up in opponent and I’ve got one as Sam only loses to top opposition.

“I’ve watched his fights and feel ready. I know we will put on a great fight for the fans, but at the end I will come away victorious.”

This is the fight Hobbs has been craving for so long as he aims to take his career to the next level.

The 27-year-old has battled injury to accumulate a record of five wins from five contests as a pro, all over four rounds and via points decisions.

The time has certainly come for Hobbs to take a step up in opponent if he is to progress to title level as he desires, and Couzens certainly provides that test.

Despite only being one year older than Hobbs, Couzens is vastly more experienced and has 25 pro fights under his belt.

He has a respectable enough record – 11 wins, 13 defeats and one draw – but has been in the ring with some very good domestic fighters, having twice boxed for the Southern Area title. He has even boxed abroad too.

Hobbs though, has his sights set on moving up the ladder in the near future.

“A win for me will put me very close to titles and up the rankings,” he said.

“My training has gone well, and has been made easier by having a local business sponsor me in Uppercut Barbers.

“I’m feeling good and expect to have a good crowd from all over the country, including a lot of army guys, come to support me.

“There is a new promoter called Steve Goodwin who is working down south and willing to invest heavily in the local area with some massive plans over the next year for the locals.

“So, hopefully, big things are set to happen.”
