MILLBANK Gym are gearing up for a packed pre- Christmas schedule with Matty Tew back in action this week and a new arrival in the shape of King Davidson.
On top of all that promoter Simon Williamson is also busy putting the finishing touches to a dinner show at Southampton’s Novotel hotel on Friday, December 2.
First up is Tew’s, pictured above, engagement at the York Hall, Bethnal Green on Friday night.
He is still waiting to learn his opponent but having only boxed twice so far this year is looking forward to getting in as many fights again between now and the turn of 2012 with a date on the December 2 bill also in the offing.
Tew’s trainer, Wayne Batten, said: “We’re looking at a four-rounder this time and we are pleased to get Matty out again.
“We don’t want to look too far ahead but hopefully he will win this and then we will get him out again quickly on December 2 and then he will be sharper and ready for some exciting times in the new year.
Title shot “We’d like to get him a title shot then but he has to come through these first.”
Davidson’s arrival at Millbank has been rather unorthodox.
The Nigerian who lives in Australia, where he is married to a native and has children, was introduced to Millbank via his cousin who lives on the Northam estate.
After a few preliminary discussions Davidson duly flew into the country and is now training ahead of a place on the bill on December 2.
There are plenty of complications in the longer term regarding getting a work permit – as it stands he has to fly back out again as soon as he fights – as well as being managed overseas.
But right now both sides are just getting to know each other and with Davidson having had 12 wins from 13 fights, including going the 12-round distance in his last three outings, and having held four light-middleweight belts, he is certainly an exciting addition.
“It’s a very strange thing in many ways,” said Batten of training a man who won 175 of 180 amateur fights and was a semi-finalist in the 2002 Commonwealth Games, winning him a bronze medal.
“But there is no doubting his quality or his desire. To come all the way here just underlines that and he is training so hard.
“King has a lot of belief he is doing the right thing and who knows where this could lead in the long run.
“He’s been ranked as high as 13 by the WBA in the past, has plenty of experience and is great to have around the gym.
“The other guys are learning a lot from having someone like that around the place and that’s what we want.
“Both parties are just seeing what happens up to his fight at the Novotel on December 2 and then we will take it from there.”
Tickets for the show at the Novotel are currently available.
There is either the option of a three-course black tie dinner at £75 per head or just watching the boxing priced at £30. For tickets call 0845 250 0670.
