THE chairman of Australia’s selectors has admitted they are contemplating calling George Bailey up for the Test series in India.

If the Tasmanian batsman, pictured, is called up and impresses, he could well keep his place for this summer’s tour of England.

And that would be bad news for Hampshire, who have signed Bailey as their main overseas player for the 2013 campaign.

John Inverarity, the chairman of selectors, told The Daily Echo: “George Bailey is being considered for the Test side.

“We are very happy with what we are seeing from him.”

Bailey, 30, is currently skippering Australia’s ODI side in a series against Sri Lanka.

Appointed his country’s t20 captain last year, he has recently been handed the 50-over captaincy as well as Michael Clarke is taking a rest.

Bailey struck 89 in Australia’s win in the first ODI last Friday, and hit 26 as Sri Lanka levelled two days later.

Bailey’s potential elevation to the Test scene has polarised opinion in his country.

Some former Australian Test players insist he is not good enough.
