Australian all-rounder Shane Watson faces an anxious 48 hours in his bid to play in the first Ashes Test starting at the Gabba in Brisbane on Thursday.

The former Hampshire man strained a hamstring while bowling for Queensland in Friday's domestic one-day match against Western Australia at the WACA ground in Perth.

He and batsman Damien Martyn (elbow) were due to be assessed by the Australian team physiotherapist in Brisbane today.

The 25-year-old Watson admitted: "We just have to see how it continues to be over the next couple of days.

"I'll be doing everything I can to be ready for Thursday, but we'll see what happens."

Batsman Michael Clarke - another former Rose Bowl star - has been added to Australia's squad as cover for Watson.

Meanwhile, Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait has been cleared of any damage to his calf and will be fit to bowl for South Australia on the final day of the tour match against England at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

Tait, who is one of three fast bowlers vying for the third fast bowling position for the first Test, was forced to leave the field on day two after suffering from severe cramp after bowling nearly 20 overs in hot conditions.

He bowled short spells against England on Saturday and finished day two with figures of 3-65, but his erratic bowling yielded five wides and nine no-balls.
