Michael Carberry has saluted the addition of Sohail Tanvir to the Hampshire squad, ahead of today’s Yorkshire Bank 40 clash at Durham.

The Group B leaders are aiming to make it four victories on the spin in the competition, as they look to edge closer to a semi-final berth.

Hampshire have been boosted by the arrival of Tanvir, pictured, who made his debut in Tuesday’s success against Derbyshire, taking 3-42.

“Sohail brings a lot, he’s been an international for quite a few years and obviously he’s a very different style,” said Carberry. “I don’t think you would have seen many bowlers of his particular style floating around.

“First time I faced him in the net it was a bit of a handful, I’ve got to be honest.

“A lot of the boys are trying to feed off his experience and stuff like that – how to swing the ball and the areas to bowl.

“He’s obviously done it at the highest level for quite a few years. He’s a good guy and a good batsman as well, so he brings a lot to the table.”

Carberry scored 96 when the teams met in the reverse fixture last month and will be hoping to make it over the century mark today.

Hampshire will face a Durham side rocked by news of a suspected heart attack suffered by their coach, Geoff Cook, this week. That is not expected to stop the game going ahead, and Hampshire flew north yesterday morning.

“Durham at home is not an easy task,” said Carberry. “They’ve got a good blend of youth and experience. Again, similar to us, they’re a very well-drilled team, with some international experience.

“It will be a good game. It was a very good game here and we’re looking forward to it.”
