Hampshire will have to beat Derbyshire in their final group game to secure a home semi-final in the YB40 after a nerve wracking defeat against Lancashire at Old Trafford.

Brad Taylor, aged just 16 years, 159 days, broke a 146 year-old record as the youngest player to take a wicket for the county in a competitive match when he had Lancashire opener Stephen Moore caught behind with his third ball of the game.

Moore had made a 43-ball 51 and off-spinner Taylor, from Holybourne, nr Alton, finished with 2-50 from his eight overs after also claiming the big scalp of former Hampshire star Simon Katich, who was caught at mid-on for 22.

Charles Young, whose record as the youngest player - at 15, years 131 days - to have played first-class cricket in England was broken by Yorkshire’s Barney Gibson last year, took two wickets in his second match for the county in 1867.

But Young played before the introduction of the County Championship in 1895.

Dimi Mascarenhas also took only a second five wicket haul in one-day cricket for Hampshire as his career with the county comes towards as a close but Lancashire finished with a strong looking total of 261-9.

It was always going to be a tough ask for Hampshire who were without Michael Carberry, James Vince and Danny Briggs who were away with the England Lions.

But Hampshire made a great effort of the run chase, with the highlight being 65 from Neil McKenzie while Sean Ervine and Jimmy Adams weighed in with 43 and 41 respectively.

By the final over Hampshire needed 13 to win the game and get through to the semi-finals but they finished six runs short of their target and lost by five wickets.

Hampshire still remain in pole position to get through as they continue to lead their Group B but need to beat Derbyshire on the road on Bank Holiday Monday to make sure.
