HAMPSHIRE batsman Michael Carberry has been called up for the England A squad for their forthcoming tour of Bangladesh.

The call is reward for the opener after his excellent debut season for the Hawks in 2006 following his departure from Kent.

Michael Yardy has been given the consolation of the England A captaincy after being dropped from the senior side's one-day squad.

The Sussex all-rounder seemed on course to earn his place in England's World Cup party after being called into the one-day squad at the end of last summer and retaining his place for the ICC Champions Trophy in India.

But, after being overlooked for the forthcoming triangular tournament against Australia and New Zealand when the selectors chose to look at Monty Panesar as a further spin option, 26-year-old Yardy has instead been chosen as captain of the A team's tour to Bangladesh in the New Year.

He will lead a squad including exciting Yorkshire spinner Adil Rashid, who is currently recovering from a stress fracture of his back having announced himself to English cricket with six for 67 on his County Championship debut against Warwickshire last season.

Kent's 26-year-old Danish fast bowler Amjad Khan, who is now qualified to play for England, has also been called up, while Alex Loudon, Tim Bresnan and Stuart Broad - all of whom have been played one-day internationals in the past year - are called on again.

The squad, however, does not include Robert Key and Owais Shah, both of whom featured for the A team last season despite both being included on England's stand-by list for the Ashes series.

''Owais Shah and Robert Key remain very much in the selectors' thoughts and their non-selection reflects the fact that they have already had extensive experience of touring with England A and the National Academy squad and provides valuable opportunities for other players,'' explained chairman of selectors David Graveney.

National Academy Director Peter Moores, who joined the selection panel to choose the 14-man squad, added: ''The squad is very exciting as it contains some new names such as Nick Compton and Adil Rashid and the recently-qualified Amjad Khan.

''We are also giving an opportunity to Michael Carberry and Will Jefferson, two players who have been around for some time but have shown the attitude and ability to move on to higher honours.

''The squad will also offer another chance to Alex Loudon and Tim Bresnan, who have both been in the England set up during the last 18 months.

''The rest of the squad is made up of the players who spent the first part of the winter in Perth who will have a chance to show how they have developed, in the competitive phase of the programme".
