MICHAEL Bates hit a century as Hampshire’s 2nd XI lost their penultimate pre-season friendly.
The wicketkeeper-batsman made a run-a-ball 121 (17 fours, one six) as Hampshire made 265 in their 50 overs against Dorset.
Hampshire Academy leg-spinner Mason Crane was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-37 from his ten overs.
But Dorset won a dramatic game by one wicket, reaching their target with just two balls to spare. Hampshire II play a three-day friendly against Surrey at Guildford, starting tomorrow, before beginning their Second Eleven Trophy campaign next Thursday.
