FORMER Hampshire batting star Simon Katich is to take over as captain of Derbyshire from Graeme Welch for the 2007 season.
All-rounder Welch has decided to step down after one season in charge in order to concentrate on his own performance, with Aussie ace Katich taking over following discussions with director of cricket David Houghton.
Katich said: ''I have been fortunate to play under some great captains and have led New South Wales so I intend to bring all that experience to Derbyshire and carry on the progress the club made under Graeme".
Houghton explained: ''Graeme was an outstanding captain on and off the field for us last year but in Simon we have a natural alternative and proven leader".
Katich was Hampshire's player of the year in the 2003 season and also had spells at the Rose Bowl in 2004 and 2005.
